Temporary Shoring: Excavation Depth vs Embedment Depth

Temporary shoring — soldier piles or sheet piles used to retain the sides of an excavation during construction — is sized using two different depth measurements that are easy to conflate: excavation depth and embedment depth. Only counting one of them produces a shoring take-off that's short exactly where it can't afford to be.
Excavation Depth: Down to the Cut
Excavation depth is the straightforward one — how far down the actual dig goes, from existing ground level to the bottom of the excavated pit. This is the number most directly visible on a site plan or cross-section, and it's the depth workers and equipment will actually be operating within.
Embedment Depth: Below the Cut, Into Undisturbed Soil
Embedment depth is the additional length the pile or sheet extends below the bottom of the excavation, into soil that hasn't been disturbed by the dig. This portion is what actually provides the shoring system's resistance — a pile that stopped exactly at the excavation bottom would have nothing anchoring it against the soil pressure trying to push the wall inward. Embedment depth is a structural design value, not a convenience margin, and it's determined by soil conditions and the loads the shoring needs to resist.
Soldier Piles: One More Dimension
For soldier pile systems specifically (as opposed to continuous sheet piling), pile spacing along the length of the wall is a third number to track — piles aren't continuous, so total pile count depends on wall length divided by spacing, with each pile individually needing the full excavation-plus-embedment length.
Worked Example: Soldier Pile Wall
An excavation cut 6 meters deep, with an engineered embedment depth of 3 meters below the cut line, needs soldier piles totaling 9 meters each — not 6. For a 30-meter wall length with piles spaced at 1.5 meters center to center, that's 30 ÷ 1.5 = 20 spacing intervals, requiring 21 piles (the same "+1" logic that applies to any evenly spaced run of members), each one the full 9-meter length. Treating embedment as optional and pricing only the 6-meter excavation depth would under-order roughly a third of the total pile length across all 21 piles.
Common Mistakes
The most damaging mistake is exactly that: sizing shoring piles off excavation depth alone because that's the dimension most visibly labeled on a cross-section, while embedment depth — the structural component that actually resists the soil pressure pushing the wall inward — sits in the engineer's design calculations rather than on the same drawing. A shoring system priced this way isn't just under-budgeted; it's a genuine safety concern, since a pile stopped at the excavation bottom has nothing anchoring it below the cut. A second, smaller but still costly mistake is calculating pile count from wall length alone without confirming spacing against the specific soldier pile system's design spacing, which varies by soil condition and retained height and isn't a fixed industry-standard number the way, say, CHB coursing dimensions are.
